The DeLarme way to Write An Essay
I'm not saying this the best
way or even the way your English teacher may want it. This is how I write my
essays. I think its fine for most social studies classes
Example Essay Topic/Question:
"Many
people consider Mr. X the greatest Prime Minster in the history of England. Do
you agree and why?"
- Remember, an essay only really has 2 major parts 1) Your Answer (the
thesis) 2) The reason or points that back-up your answer.
- Plan:
Spend some time thinking about your answer and the reasons why you think
that. Use any free time you have (while riding the bus, walking to your
class, waiting in line, etc.
- Write down your reasons. An
outline is one very effective way of organizing your thoughts.
- Now you are ready to write
the essay.
- The first paragraph will be your thesis,
the major overall opinion of the essay. "I think Mr. X was the greatest
Prime Minister." Mention each point briefly. (one or two sentences per
point.)
- Write Paragraph #2: Talk about point
#1 in-depth, give examples, quotes,
etc.
- Write the rest of the body paragraphs that
same way
- Write your conclusion:
Summarize what you said in the essay (it can be similar to the first
paragraph.) This can your shortest paragraph. (Sometimes only 3 sentences)
- Wait 24 for hours
and reread the paper
yourself, have someone
proof-read it or both. - VERY
IMPORTANT!!!
Other Ideas for Adding "Flavor" to the Essay
- Start the essay off with a interesting or funny quote or
story that relates to the topic.
