 A.P. HUMAN GEOGRAPHY

Geography is “the study of the Earth's surface: its topography, climate and physical conditions, and how these factors affect people and society.” This class is about the the latter half of the definition. We will look at the effect Humans have on our world. We will cover the each of the large regional areas.

Since this is an Advanced Placement course, we will invest a lot of time studying for the AP Human Geography test in Mid May of 2004

Our Units for this course are as follows

·        Agriculture and Rural Land use

·        Cities and Urban Land use

·        Industrialization and Economic Development

·        Political Geography

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Grading System.   

·        100 to 90% = A

·        89-80% = B

·         79-70 = C

·        69-56 = D

·        55 and below = Fail

Assignments & Methods of Assessment

• Practice Tests for the A.P. Test (every two weeks)
• Textbook assignments (Teacher developed questions & questions from the book)
• Research project (Details to follow)
• Country report (75 points, individual)
• Major region  (150 points, group)
• Map Activities (10 points)
• Notebook
• I will collect it twice this semester
• It includes notes, assignment sheet, syllabus, and maps

·        Opinion Essays on an issue in Geography. (50  Points each)

• Other assignments (group assignments, interpreting political cartoons, responding to audio & video clips)
• Participation in class discussions. (Graded every 5 weeks, 20 points possible)

Late  Work & Make Up Assignments

·        Late work is worth ½ credit. You must turn it in within a week of the due date

·        If it is because of absence: Students must make it up within a week of when I assigned it

·        If it is a test or quiz, you must make an appointment with me to do it either before school or during lunch

Exams

• Types of questions are mainly multiple choice, true/ false and essay
• Other types of questions could involve matching, interpreting charts and political cartoons
• Tests range between 50-75 Points 
• Quizzes range from 20 to 30 Points

CLASSROOM RULES:

1. Be silent when someone else is talking
2. Raise your hand and wait for me to call on you if you wish to speak.
3. Be prepared when the bell rings. Have a pen and piece of paper out.
4. No food or beverages in the classroom. Water in a clear container is fine.
5. Do not cheat on assignments, tests, or papers. When I catch you, you will receive an automatic zero for the assignment. Do not plagiarize from written sources or from the web. Since plagiarism is easy to catch, it is always better to hand in your work and get a C- than someone else’s and get an F.
